WHERE THIS ROLE CAN LEAD
QA Engineering Lead
Opportunity to grow into broader quality engineering and automation leadership, based on demonstrated results and business needs.
Career progression that takes 4-5 years elsewhere can happen in 1-2 years here for high performers.
Build and improve QA systems for a $1 billion+ e-commerce brand to deliver reliable releases, reducing dependence on repeated manual checking.
We've been AI-first since December 2023: this role applies that commitment to QA engineering, with personally executed automation and independently verified results. Own the quality and effectiveness of the workflows you implement, while retaining established QA release approvals.

The Opportunity
You’ll lead the quality engineering and automation function for Puffy.com, a $1Billion+ e-commerce brand, as QA Engineering Lead.
Provide technical direction for the existing QA team while remaining personally hands-on in QA engineering, preventive processes, automation and coaching. Build AI-powered QA workflows that combine reliable automation, actual execution evidence and expert judgment. The work includes both reliable technical delivery and developing independent ownership across the team.
Start with critical ecommerce journeys, A/B tests and recurring viewport/UI issues. Extend proven improvements to other Content/Design QA workflows where appropriate.
*This position is remote, with the option to work from our Dubai office (with 0% income tax), if preferred (relocation and visa sponsorship support available).
Resources provided
You’ll have access to our latest company-provided AI tools, including ChatGPT and Claude, multiple AI agents, bots, plugins, AI projects, and automations through platforms such as n8n. You’ll also receive the department tools, relevant data, assets and specialist support needed to deliver your work. We expect you to use these resources to automate routine work and deliver high-quality results quickly.
Decision-making authority
You can decide independently:
Set technical coverage standards and reusable test strategies within agreed release priorities; choose low-risk test-design and debugging methods; refine automation and nonproduction QA workflows using approved tools and allocated capacity; provide technical direction, coaching and review of automation quality within the agreed team structure. Rhogie continues daily QA delivery and work allocation; existing performance-management and QA sign-off processes remain in place.
Approval required:
Obtain approval for changes to release gates or required QA sign-off, acceptance of unresolved production risk, live changes, sensitive-data use, new paid tools or spend, hiring, and changes to team responsibilities or cross-team priorities. Escalate delivery conflicts to the hiring manager and responsible release owner.
Who You'll Work With
Meet the team you'd be working with, and what you'd work on together:
What You'll Own
Responsibilities:
Prioritize release coverage: Turn change briefs, known failures and customer-journey evidence into AI-assisted risk-based test designs. Define risk-based coverage standards and reusable test strategies for ecommerce releases and A/B tests, enabling the QA team to apply them independently. Coverage includes promotions, checkout and mobile presentation.
Build executable automation: Identify manual bottlenecks, improve and reuse existing automation, and build and validate new workflows where needed. Use AI for core test-code production, debugging and reporting, then run, inspect and refine the outputs. Maintain reusable browser automation in version control and CI/CD with trustworthy results and evidence.
Prevent recurring defects: Investigate failures and unreliable tests, determine root causes and deliver verified regression checks and preventive process changes. Define monitoring and escalation rules, including device and iOS launch monitoring.
Develop independent ownership: Coach QA engineers, clarify responsibility and review boundaries, and produce maintainable handoffs. Help team members operate and maintain workflows independently while retaining required QA approval.
Demonstrate sustained improvement: Establish baselines and review escaped defects, repeat issues, QA turnaround and total human effort, including review, fixes and maintenance. Conduct monthly revenue-based coverage reviews with Analytics and CRO, and report measured results separately from estimates.
Outcomes:
Reliable releases: Reduce escaped defects and repeat issues across critical ecommerce journeys, releases and A/B tests, demonstrated against established baselines.
Faster QA turnaround: Shorten QA turnaround and reduce QA-related release delays as proven coverage expands, without weakening required checks or sign-off.
Lower total human effort: Reduce repetitive manual testing through reusable automation and AI-assisted workflows, with net effort reductions that account for review, fixes and maintenance.
Independent team operation: Enable QA team members to operate and maintain improved workflows without depending on a single reviewer, while retaining required QA approval.
Quality standards:
Reproducible tests: Deliver tests with meaningful assertions that detect relevant defects and produce results that others can rerun.
Verified AI outputs: Validate AI-generated work through actual execution and retain evidence of the checks performed and results obtained.
Maintainable automation: Keep test code reusable and version-controlled, with clear documentation and handoffs.
Accurate release evidence: Distinguish browser emulation from real-device evidence and keep unresolved risks visible to the release decision.
Pace and ownership:
Delivery commitments: Contribute early, deliver high-quality work with fast turnaround and agree task-level timing against release risk.
Prompt escalation: Flag blockers promptly and escalate delivery conflicts to the hiring manager and responsible release owner.
Accountable follow-through: Own defects in your automation and workflow improvements through verification and closure; support the QA team in preventing recurring release issues. Coordinate with Development when application changes or deployment support are needed.
Effort visibility: Measure elapsed turnaround separately from total human effort, including preparation, review, corrections, rework and maintenance.
What You Bring
What you must demonstrate:
Hands-on ecommerce and Shopify QA experience across product selection, PDPs, cart, checkout and order completion, including discounts, bundles, free gifts and express checkout. Understand Shopify customization and testing limitations.
Strong coding and debugging capability, with experience building and maintaining browser automation using Playwright or an equivalent framework, plus practical Git and CI/CD capability. Independently assess risks and design, build, run, debug and validate QA automation.
Strong UI/UX quality judgment across browsers, devices and viewport dimensions, including shorter mobile heights, first-fold visibility and overlapping elements. Understand the differences between real-device testing, simulation and emulation, including their limitations and when real-device evidence is required.
Proven personal implementation of AI-assisted QA workflows for test design, automation development, defect investigation and reporting. Verify AI outputs through actual execution and retain evidence of validation and results.
Systems thinking: identify root causes, prevent recurrence, maintain risk-based coverage, investigate unreliable tests and establish release checks, monitoring and escalation rules.
Evidence of personally delivered improvements. Explain your contribution and provide before-and-after results for quality, release speed and human effort, including review, fixes and maintenance.
Hands-on team leadership that develops independent ownership, coaches engineers, establishes clear accountability and achieves successful team adoption of improved workflows while retaining required QA approval.
Additional advantages:
JavaScript/TypeScript experience.
SQL and analytics experience to prioritize coverage using customer traffic, revenue and funnel data.
Accessibility and performance testing experience.
Specialist production monitoring, synthetic customer-journey checks and incident investigation experience.
Formal people-management experience is preferred. Demonstrated coaching, accountability and successful team adoption are required.
Additional requirements:
Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Arthur Andreasyan, Puffy CEO, Founder & Forbes Council Member
Hi there,
If you're reading this, you're probably asking whether Puffy is the right place for your next chapter. I founded Puffy in 2017 after a simple question: "What would it feel like to sleep on a cloud?" That question became a business, and I wanted to build a company where ambitious people could grow with us.
That same mindset is why we became AI-first in December 2023, well before it became a standard way of working. We move quickly, stay relentless and hungry, question the usual way of doing things, and give people real ownership. We believe a focused team can outperform much larger companies. What matters here is the quality of your work, the decisions you make, the problems you solve before anyone asks, and the impact you create.
If you join us, I'll expect a lot from you, and I'll make sure you have the trust, context, and support to do meaningful work. If that kind of challenge excites you, I'd be glad to have you build Puffy with us.
Looking forward to working with you,
ArthurA
